About the conference
The contemporary art market has undergone profound transformations since the late twentieth century, reshaping its geographies, actors, infrastructures and systems of value. Globalisation and regionalisation, new collecting geographies, the expansion of art fairs and biennials, and the growing role of galleries, auction houses, museums, private collections and digital platforms have transformed the circulation, legitimation and valuation of contemporary art.
Historicizing Global Contemporary Art Markets: Trajectories, Infrastructures, and Regimes of Value examines these transformations from historically grounded, transnational and interdisciplinary perspectives. The conference focuses on the infrastructures through which artworks, artists and art-world agents enter local, regional and transnational systems of cultural and economic recognition.
Bringing together researchers and professionals working across art history, sociology of culture, market studies and related fields, the conference addresses changing market geographies, fairs and biennials, galleries and auction houses, collecting and philanthropy, financialisation and digital markets, and the tensions between increasing diversification and persistent inequalities within the global art world.
